Mr. Albert H. York was born about 1833 in Gilmanstown, Belknap County, New Hampshire and was a son of Jonah and Elizabeth “Betsey” York. About 1854 he moved to Sauk City, Wisconsin, likely to become a part of the Freie Gemeinde, a group of “free thinkers” that settled the town in about 1852. He married a woman named Sarah who was a little older than he, but they had no children. In the 1860’s the couple moved back east, settling in Stowe, Lamoille County, Vermont. He died on August 28, 1874 of tuberculosis. The photo was taken at the N. L. Merrill Studio in Stowe.
